What is the Mathematics Placement Examination? / Must all students take it?
The Orientation program includes administration of the mathematics competency and calculus readiness exams. All incoming students must take the competency exam unless they have satisfied the mathematics competency requirement as outlined below. Ways students may satisfy the ESU Basic Mathematical Skills competency requirement: 1) a score of 500 or higher on the Mathematics SAT, 2) a score of 3 or higher in AP calculus or statistics test, 3) proficient or advanced standing by Pennsylvania students on the Grade 11 PSSA mathematics test, 4) a grade of C or better in a transfer mathematics course that was completed within 5 years of enrolling at ESU and which transfers as a general education course. Students who have satisfied the competency requirement by one of the means listed above and who plan to major in mathematics or a science, and/or plan to take an ESU calculus course before they graduate, must take the calculus readiness exam at Orientation.
