What is the Mangosteen fruit and where is it from?
The Mangosteen is tangerine-sized and is deep purple in color on the outside, with a bright white pulp in the inside. Prized because of its excellent flavor, in Asia it is called the “Queen of Fruits”. The mangosteen is a fruit originating in Southeast Asia. It is considered a member of the plant family Clusiaseae, although it is often in earlier works referred to as a member of the Guttiferae family. The latin name for the mangosteen is Garcinia mangostana L. and the genus Garcinia is an honor bestowed upon Laurent Garcin by Linnaeus for his work as a botanist and naturalist in the 18th century. Outside of the mangosteen’s native range, the fruit is considered exotic. Because of specific stringent tropical cultural requirements, the mangosteen is difficult to grow outside its native regions.
