MVCR came into existence on the Urbana-Champaign campus of the University of Illinois in 1998 to help faculty at community colleges in the state of Illinois and at the University of Illinois to learn more about effective pedagogies and technologies to develop and create online courses, and to begin the process of incorporating technology into face-to-face courses. Since then it has expanded to provide faculty development for any faculty or staff member in the US and in other countries.
