Electricity can come from magnets moving past a coil or vice-versa–usually by one or the other being spun, which is what’s being done in a generator (found in coal-driven, oil-, nuclear-, hydro-, or wind-driven generation plants)–or chemically, as what’s being done in a battery, or by converting light into it, as what’s being done in a solar cell, or by the piezo-electric effect, as what’s done in some gas grill igniters and other lighters–where a special crystal is being struck, which creates a spark (not to be confused with flint-and-steel igniters)–or by a thermocouple, as what’s being done in a modern-day fireplace lighter, where some of the heat from a pilot is being converted into electricity which then lights the bigger flame.
