What is the main cause for halitosis?
In 90% of the cases the reason is in the mouth and is caused by bacterial plaque formed on the tongue, the lingual saburra. The tongue has small grooves, similar to small balls. It is there that bacteria which feed on cells that scale from the mucous membrane of the mouth accommodate. This bacterial plaque ferments and liberates a sulphur like odor, bad breath itself. The mouth scales because it is dry and this can be due to many causes: many times the person has the habit of breathing through the mouth, of biting the lips and the inside of the cheeks or, simply he/she has low saliva production. The saliva has the function of promoting cleansing of the mouth: the more a person salivates, the better his/her breath will be. Stress, the use of certain products, medications and the lack of adequate hydration contribute to diminishing saliva production.
