What is the longest traffic tunnel in the world?
The Seikan Tunnel in Japan is the world record holder with a tunnel distance of 33.49 miles. Almost half of the tunnel runs under the Tsugaru Strait, which connects the island of Honshū to HokkaidŠin northern Japan, and bridges the Sea of Japan with the Pacific Ocean. The tunnel opened on March 13, 1988, after 17 years of construction. Two stations are located in the tunnel, the Tappi-Kaitei Station and the Yoshioka-Kaitei Station, both of which were the first train stations in the world built under the sea.
