What is the LIRR?
The MTA Long Island Rail Road is the largest commuter railroad in the USA – operating 735 trains on a typical weekday, serving more than 290,000 customers daily and over 85 million trips per year. A subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), the LIRR was chartered in 1834. It started as a private company founded as part of a boat-train-boat route between Manhattan and Boston. When other train routes developed to New England, the LIRR became an important local transportation provider. Throughout the years, the LIRR has developed along with Long Island serving billions of customers, taking them to and from jobs, homes, schools, sporting events, concerts and Broadway shows.
