Victorian society was notoriously straight-laced and sexually repressed and the Jekyll-Hyde story let the imagination run free; it released the inner urges the Victorians deemed inappropriate for the time but in literature, it was not only accepted, but embracedand acclaimed. The book is not about crime in Victorian society, per se, it is about morals.
