Without much more details I would say “noise”. Noise can change a “1” to “0” and vice versa, so error detection and correction is very important in digital communication systems. There is also ‘capacity” and bandwidth and there is Shannon’s famous theorem that gives you the ideal capacity for a given bandwidth and noise.
