What is the likelihood of the Gaviota Coast becoming a unit of the National Park System?
The feasibility study will result in recommendations from the National Park Service to Congress on the suitability and feasibility of designating areas within the study area as a National Park unit. NPS may recommend National Seashore or other designation, or no action, or an alternate locally-based protection strategy. It takes authorizing legislation from the US Congress to create a National Park unit, which requires strong support throughout the country. Approximately one third of the new area feasibility studies completed by NPS result in congressional designation of new units of the National Park system.
