Inevitable. IT has happened before on numerous occasions, the chances of it not happening again are infinitesimally small. When will it happen? Who knows? One day it will happen again but we can’t really say when with any certainty. Is this cause for alarm? Yes and no. A really huge impact is far less likely than a smaller one. Still even a “small” impact could make life very difficult for us. On the other hand we know about the threat and are actively working towards finding any possible threats. Not that this is easy and even when detected ideas for stopping them hitting us are very poorly developed. Another sobering thought is that around 100 years ago what was probably a small fragment of a comet (or maybe an asteroid, opinion is divided) hit Tunguska in Siberia. This was a fairly small object but the detestation was pretty big. If this had hit a major city it would have killed millions. These events are estimated to happen every 100 years or so.
