What is the legal status of the Cryonics Institute in Michigan ?
Also in response to the Ted Williams affair, the Cryonics Institute was placed under a “Cease and Desist” Order by Bureau of Commerical Services Director Andrew Metcalf after the SPORTS ILLUSTRATED story appeared. Following intensive negotiations, the Cryonics Institute was licensed in Michigan as a Cemetery and allowed to continue largely as it had done, with the exception of requiring perfusion to be done at a mortician’s facility rather than in the Institute’s facility. A Trust Fund was established by the Cryonics Institute to meet the requirements of the State of Michigan to hold some of the funds of the cryonics patients in a trust for perpetual care.
