What is the leagal age to leave kids home alone?
I actually called DSS here in MA for this very same reason – they told me that in my area, there IS no “legal” age, that it is up to the parent to judge maturity & responsible-ness of the child, and as long as the child understands emerency procedures (dialing 911, etc) and has somewhere to go if there IS an emergency then it’s all good. My son is 10 (almost 11) and he stays home alone from 7 am to 3:30 pm when I get home from work. NOW – Before anyone starts bashing me for being a bad mother, let me add that I cannot AFFORD child care or summer camps (I fall in that section of society where I make too much to qualify for assistance or reduced fees but not enough to actually be able to afford the regular fees). My son has all of my contact numbers as well as his grandmothers and my significant other’s number, plus about a dozen neighbors he can go to if he has to.
