What is the law relating to invasive trees etc. from neighbours garden?

The law is that you can legally cut off anything hanging over your side but that the cuttings are the property of the property owner and must be returned to them. However if anything falls onto your land i.e. windfall apples, tree branches then you can keep them if you wish. The council may not be able to do anything so just keep cutting and throwing over.
