What is the law regarding minimum wage, overtime, and pay schedule?

New York State’s minimum wage as of July 2009 is $7.25/hour. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Most workers who are covered by the minimum wage must also earn time and a half after they work 40 (forty) hours in a week. Most workers have the right to a day of rest and to weekly pay. However, there is no right to sick days, vacation days, or paid holidays unless the employer has promised them.To see all of New York’s labor laws, including exceptions to the minimum wage, click here for the Department of Labor’s Labor Laws page. In addition, answers to many common questions regarding wages, overtime, meals, etc. can be found on the Labor Standards Division’s FAQ page.
