Mersennes primes are generally the largest prime numbers. That’s because they are based on the factorization of N+1 and N-1 (N being the largest number). The largest Mersenne prime is over 9 million digits long.

641 I can think of higher prime numbers, but that would be cheating, because I’d have to spend a minute checking they were prime first. I’m not sure of any of the Mersenne primes off the top of my head. 641 is a number I vaguely remember trying to factorize recently and finding it prime.
