What is the language requirement for the PhD and how do I obtain verification?
Advanced proficiency in one modern foreign language, and standard proficiency in a second modern foreign language, is required of all Ph.D. candidates in the Department of History. However, depending on the student’s course of study, upper division courses (at least 6 hours) in the same language one submits for “advanced” proficiency may be substituted for “standard” proficiency in a second language. Competence at the advanced proficiency level in one of these languages will be certified automatically by obtaining the M.A. degree; competence in the other language should be certified as early as possible in the student’s doctoral program and not later than the 3rd semester of graduate study. Advanced proficiency is determined by doing one of the following: 1. Complete a fourth semester language course (2020), or the equivalent at another institution, with at least a B grade (3.0).
