English and Spanish are the two official languages. Spanish is used for 99.9% of all spoken and written communication, but all children in Puerto Rico are required to take 12 years education in both languages. Some get more out of it than others, but most people are bilingual to at least a grade school level. In the large metropolitan areas, nearly everyone is fully bilingual.
