What is the Keyboard Layout?
The Keyboard Layout is the way the Keyboard looks. For example on German and Swiss keyboards the Y key is at the bottom (closest to you) left of the keyboard, and the Z key in the middle on the top. On most other keyboards, though, the placement is the opposite. E.g.: On an U.S. keyboard, the Z key is at the bottom left of the keyboard, and the Y key in the middle on the top. A computer doesn’t really “see” what keyboard is attached to it by itself, so we have to tell it, so that it knows which key is supposed to produce which character. This also enables us to select other Keyboard Layouts in the computer, e.g. to make the Y and Z swap places to something we’re more used to. See: How do I change the Keyboard Layout?
