What is the job of the theater director? What are the qualities of a good director?
In our situation, many of our projects are director generated, in other words I will go to someone whose talent I believe in and see if they have a project in mind that matches our aspirations for the year. A great portion of our work each season is world premieres, so the directors are matched with the project early on and works collaboratively with the author and designer to bring the show through its development stage and into production. When did you know you wanted to be a director, and what training have you had along those lines? Was directing something you studied? I went to a very small school – MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL – and had a great undergrad education. Very intense and personal. In fact in my graduating class there were four theater majors, and four wonderful full-time instructors staffed the department. Talk about great one-on-one intensity.
