What is the Job Description for a Substance Abuse Counselor?
Substance abuse counselors–also referred to as drug and alcohol rehabilitation technicians, substance abuse technicians, rehabilitation counselors and chemical dependency technicians–counsel people who abuse drugs and alcohol. They help these chemically dependent persons identify behaviors and problems that are related to their addiction and come up with coping mechanisms. Most substance abuse counselors are trained to work with all forms of substance abuse. However, they may specialize and work only with alcohol-dependent clients or clients who abuse drugs.
