The Java Runtime Environment contains everything needed to run a Java program, but does not software needed to compile Java source code. One version of the JRE is implemented as a Java-plug in, designed to be connected to Netscape and Microsoft IE browsers.

The JRE, or Java Runtime Environment, is the program you need to run Java programs on your computer. Downloading and installing the JRE (available here) is a good thing to do anyway, because it will allow you to run all Java applications.
