What is the JANET Usenet News Service?
The JANET Usenet News Service is an umbrella name for two services aimed at delivering Usenet News to users at JANET sites. The two component services are as follows: • JANET News Feed Service. The JANET News Feed Service is a traditional NNTP service, requiring a news server at the subscribing organisation to accept a feed sent from central JANET servers; user traffic is kept within the LAN and articles are available with the minimum of delay. The client site must maintain its own news server. This service is appropriate for an organisation in which a large number of users read News in many different newsgroups. • JANET News Reader Service. The JANET News Reader Service is an off-site server for News readers and shifts user interactions on to JANET. Thus reading is slower, but the need for the organisation to maintain any server on-site is eliminated. Organisations with a low volume of News reading requirements will find this the most effective arrangement.
