What is the IUCN Red List?
The IUCN stands for the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The IUCN is an international scientific and conservation organisation that publishes independent reports on the status of the world’s natural environment. The Red List of Threatened Species provides taxonomic and distribution information as well as the conservation status for a range of plant and animal species. It is widely accepted that the IUCN Red List effectively documents and establishes the risk of extinction posed to each species assessed. The Red List can be seen as a snapshot of the health of the natural environment.
