The task bar is the entire bar at the bottom that has the quick launch and start menu. The thing by the clock is the system tray. The difference between the two is that quicklaunch is just a place to put recently used icons to quickly start programs. The tray holds the icons of actively running programs and these icons are controlled by the running programs AND can be used to control those running programs.
