If the invention is truly useful, people will usually pick it up right away. I usually tried it out myself, then showed it to friends and asked for their improvements. Then I would write up my thoughts and again give those to my correspondents for their suggestions. Then I might advertise the invention in my news-papers. If an idea is truly useful, the reaction is generally positive.
