What is the impact of being an “HMO”?
Kaiser Permanente is a non-profit HMO. Kaiser is touted by many in the health industry reform movement as a pillar of excellence in providing preventive care that is quality-driven, evidence-based and centered on patient safety. Health Maintenance Organizations were occasionally cast in a negative light \by the media in the 1990s when they first came on the scene. Reasons for this included instances of patients in some for-profit HMOs being denied access to test and doctors by the HMO. At Kaiser these are not concerns for our patients. Our patients have full access to all the latest technology and clinical expertise. In those unusual instances where the patient requires quaternary care fro UCSF, UCSD or Stanford, they are referred to those centers and Kaiser pays the medical bills. Physicians at Kaiser do not need to fill out requests to obtain certain tests and do not need to call insurance companies to get pre-approval for tests they order for their patients. It is simply ordered wit
