What Is The Impact Of Backing Up Exchange With Backup Exec?
We are in the process of re-structuring our server setup and I need to modify our tape backup strategy. Currently, we use NTBACKUP to backup Exchange nightly at 2AM. We then have scheduled jobs that copy it to another server. That sever has Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 with a direct attached tape drive. The backup file gets backed up to tape shortly after it is created. I want to have the Veritas do a direct backup instead of this kludge setup. I need to install an agent to allow me to backup files on a remote server. What I’m trying to decide is whether or not it’s worth it to get an Exchange aware agent (more $$) that would allow the Veritas backups to back up the database “real time”. My main concern is performance. We currently run Exchange 5.5 (SP4) on a dual 1GHz Pentium III w/1GB RAM. We will be implementing Exchange 2003 in about 9 months in new hardware. Probably dual Xeons (3GHz+ and 4GB RAM with multiple 15K RAID arrays). If I implement the Exchange agent, it won’t be until then.
