All Slum Dog proves is that a film made for Western audiences by a director with Western sensibilities can be a hit. Some attempts to export “Indian” films have received a reasonable welcome. As a cricket lover, I admit a special place for Lagaan. Mangal Pandey – The Rising is also impressive. As and when India adjusts its template to a more international format, I would expect more success. This would parallel Hollywood’s discovery that movies made for the international audience will make more than purely American movies.
