What is the Illinois Youth Dropout Prevention Summit?
Students from around the state of Illinois will gather at a one day summit to address the high school dropout epidemic. The Illinois State Board of Education’s Student Advisory Council is leading planning efforts for the summit and will lead the day’s discussions. The day will evolve from a focus on the five promises that America’s Promise believes are developmental resources that young people need to succeed in life. This youth-led summit precedes an adult statewide dropout prevention summit that will take place in November as one of the fifty America’s Promise summits being held. The perspectives students provide as reasons for the dropout crisis in their schools will be shared with educators, administrators, and business and community leaders at the adult summit. Who can participate in this summit? High-school aged youth are being sought from all geographic locations of the state. High school aged youth need not be enrolled in school.
