What is the ieee80211 subsystem?

0

A. The ieee80211 subsystem originated as more or less a collection of helper functions and structure definitions used by various wireless drivers. Since it was originally launched (the first sources were borrowed from the Host AP project as well as contributions from Intel), many community members have added to and improved it. Most notably, the addition of more softmac capabilities have been added as ieee80211-softmac. At the OSDL Linux Wireless Summit in 2006, it was decided by the community members present to move from the ieee80211 subsystem to the newer d80211 subsystem as the solution of choice for Linux. As a result of that decision, Intel began working on the creation of the iwlwifi project for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection adapter.
