What is the Human Interface Technology Laboratory?
• The Human Interface Technology Laboratory is an international network of university-based research centres located at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington USA, the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, and the University of Tasmania, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. The missions of the HIT Labs are twofold: 1) to empower people by building better interfaces to machines and 2) provide a means for growing the regional economy by developing and transitioning transformational technologies to the international marketplace. The original HIT Lab was organized at the University of Washington 1989 by Prof. Tom Furness, the grandfather of virtual reality, after having spent 23 years developing advanced virtual interfaces for military aircraft while working for the Department of Defense.
