What is the history of UWSPs Equity & Affirmative Action?
The affirmative action movement began at UWSP in 1972 when Chancellor Dreyfus appointed Dr. Nancy Moore as Special Advisor to the Chancellor on Women’s Affairs. This position was created for the long-term goal of creating an environment in which women could reach their maximum potential as employees. The first affirmative action policies appeared on the national level about 10 years prior to UWSP’s involvement. A succession of U. S. Presidents who passed national affirmative action acts paved the way for UWSP’s affirmative action efforts. In May 1973, a policy was drafted which stated that, “All campus educational programs and activities are equally available to all students. ” The original position of Special Advisor to the Chancellor on Women’s Affairs has evolved into the current position of Assistant to the Chancellor for Equity & Affirmative Action . The focus of affirmative action is no longer solely on women, but now includes minorities, veterans and the disabled as well. There
