About 1987 things were beginning to change in the marketplace and consoles were selling again. Master System achieved reasonable sales of 230,000 units in Europe and the Nintendo N.E.S in America that was estimated to be installed in one out of three American households. Sega saw that time was right for a more adventurous console and more importantly that people were willing to pay for more expensive Cartridge software. 16 bit machines had already reached home computer users by 1987 through the Commodore Amiga and the Atari ST. A cheap powerful Instant loading console based on this technology that was more than capable of replicating the best arcade games of the time was bound to be a top seller.
