What is the history of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever?
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever as a breed can be traced back to about 1807, when two dogs known as Newfoundlands were on a ship that wrecked near Maryland. Eventually, these dogs were bred with local retrievers and the resulting new breed was used for hunting in Chesapeake Bay. The strength and endurance of the Chessie, combined with its water-repellant coat, made it ideal for retrieving game from the cold Atlantic waters.
