What is the history of Tanjore paintings?
In the 16 th century, under the rule of Marathas, a new form of art called Tanjore paintings originated in Thanjavur (district in Tamil Nadu, India). The Maratha ruled Thanjavur for two centuries from late 16 th -18 th century. During that peroid, two communities namely – the RAJUS in Thanjavur & NAIDUS in Madurai, practiced this form of art. The artists originally from Rayalseema moved to Tanjore & Madurai due to the patronage recieved for this form of art, under the Marathas rule.Tanjore paintings are an extraordinary blend of art and craftsmanship centered on the theme of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The characteristics of Tanjore paintings are its brilliant color schemes, decorative jewellery, semi-precious stones and cut glasses. The early paintings were embedded with real Diamonds, Rubies and other precious stones.
