What is the history of homoeopathy?
• Homoeopathic medicine was discovered by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician in 1796. Hahnemann developed the scientific and philosophical foundations of this gentler way of healing. These scientific principles form the basis of successful homoeopathic practice today. As a physician Hahnemann was dissatisfied with the medical therapies and theories of his day which included barbaric treatments like blood letting and the use of poisonous and toxic substances such as mercury. He become incredibly disillusioned by the “medical profession” at that time to the point where he stopped “treating” people and made his living through other means. Being a reputed translator and chemist he was translating a treatise on Materia Medica by Dr. William Cullen of Edinburgh. In this translation Cullen had said that the bark from a Peruvian tree called “Chinchona” was said to be effective in the treatment of malaria.
