What is the history of Folgers coffee?
The Folgers Coffee Company began in 1850 in San Francisco as the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. James A. Folger, a Nantucket native, journeyed across Panama to San Francisco with two of his brothers to join the 1849 Gold Rush. While his brothers sought their fortune in the hills, James A. Folger joined William Bovee and bought a mill to grind roasted coffee beans, tea, and spices. Folger traveled through the California gold camps selling his goods and took over the entire business in 1859. The Folger Coffee Company was sold to P&G in 1963. Most recently in 2008, The J.M. Smucker Company acquired The Folgers Coffee Company and it became part of the Smucker’s Family of #1 Brands, where we are committed to quality products, relationships, and branding.
