What is the history of events at Wounded Knee in South Dakota?

Joe Starita, author of ’The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge a Lakota Odyssey’, and Edward Sheriff Curtis, whose epic photographic journeys and study took 30 years to complete I can try to relate through my own little knowledge of their history, the events as I have come to understand them. I don’t believe that I could ever adequately explain them in their entirety, as in my mind they defy all logic. To date, by far the best book I have read on the subject is written by Joe Starita. Mr. Starita was an award winning investigative journalist, and former New York City Bureau Chief for the Miami Herald. In 1992 he returned to the place he was born, Lincoln, Nebraska, and pursued his education on the First Nations Peoples by approaching and speaking with the elders of the Pine Ridge reservation and asked for an introduction to a family who would know and share with him the story of their lives as it came down to them from their ancestors. The elders introduced him to the Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge.
