What is the history of duke university?
In 1838, the Methodists and Quakers founded Trinity University in the town of Trinity, NC. In 1892, they moved it to Durham under the name Trinity University. In 1924, James Duke, who owned the American Tobacco Company and who was the first to roll cigarettes by machine, started the Duke Endowment with $40 million of his own money, and the university named itself after Buck Duke’s father Washington Duke.
