What is the history of Buxton, Maine?
Buxton is comprised of four villages: Salmon Falls, Bar Mills, West Buxton, and Buxton Center. The town was named by its first minister, Reverend Paul Coffin for his former town of Buxton, England. Before that it had been known as Narragansett. The site of the town was once used as a garrison during the war against the Narragansett Indians. An attempt to settle the area was not made until 1750 when several men and their families commenced a permanent settlement in Salmon Falls. Its first school house was established by Reverend Silas Moody in 1761. Source: http://en.wikipedia.
