What is the history of Amherst, Ohio?
The town of Amherst was established by German immigrants in 1807. In 2007, Amherst will unofficially be 200 years old. Amherst soon acquired the title Sandstone Center of the World. Many early buildings are constructed of native sandstone and the quarries were also an important source of grindstone (tool)grindstones. There were nine sandstone quarryquarries in the area operating at the peak of production.
