What is the history and meaning of the Claddagh Ring?

0

“The Claddagh ring, I was told, was an ancient wedding ring from the old Claddagh fishing village on the quay(claddagh in Irish) across the mouth of the Corrib from Galway city. It had a culture and a language and even a ‘king’ of its own. The last king had died in 1934, and the eejit government tore down the old thatched huts and replaced them with ‘council homes’ (public housing), and that pretty much distroyed the Claddagh and all it stood for….The ring stood for two hands of a marriage under the crown of a sacrament holding the single heart that man and woman had become.” SOURCE: Angel Light by Andrew Greeley, p.
