What is the historical context of the song I am Australian?
first verse is looking through the eyes of the original landowners – the verses then go on to use a historial imagery of the building of a nation using the environment and it’s people through time as concept of belonging to the country hence, forming our national identity. “I Am Australian- You are – We are Australian” is used to reinforce the imagery over time to link and associate the ‘nation’ to the individual, or the ‘self’, so that each person feels that they have a personal connection to the country/the land – to Australia. Australia also prides itself as a multi-cultural, diverse and embracing country welcoming other nationalities to join us and journey with us – ‘we are one but we are many’ – historically, as today, our country was built on the backs of migrants – we are a melting pot of world travellers who came/come together – having respect for peoples differences, struggles and achievements – together we are one (nation). Ok so that’s my handle on it! Hope this is sort of h
