The highest point on the planet Earth is the summit of Mt. Everest in the Himalayan Mountain range at 8,848 meters, or 29,028 feet above sea level. Everest is located on the border of China and Nepal in a region known as High Asia which contains 14 of the world’s highest peaks. Mt. Everest was formed approximately 60 million years ago as India’s continental plate collided with the Eurasian continental plate forcing massive amounts of land to rise from the ancient Tethys Sea. The mountain is covered in glaciers which descend from the main peak to nearby satellite peaks. The continental plates are still pressing together, causing the mountain to rise a few millimeters every year. A popular way to experience the mountain is by visiting Sagarmatha National Park in Nepal, which contains parts of the Himalayan chain as well as the southern half of Everest.
