In terms of scope of the field: Genetics/Molecular –> Genes and Cellular Activities Cell Biology –> Structure, function, and interactions between cells Physiology –> Structure and function of tissues and organ systems Ecology/Population Biology –> Study of individuals and populations interacting with environments In this case Ecology might be called the ‘highest’ level. If you are speaking of achievements, then this is a different question. A PhD is the highest degree you can earn, which generally leads into running a research lab, either at an academic or commercial institution. What might be considered the highest level of biology is often appointment to head a large research group, or become the leader of a foundation or other organization that organizes and funds scientific research.
