What is the HERC (Higher Education Readiness Component)?
A1: The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) required for the first time that students have an exit-level assessment in grade 11 that must, by law, include a higher education readiness component. Performance on the 11th grade exit-level tests is used to assess not only a student’s preparedness for graduation from a Texas public high school, but also the student’s readiness for college-level work. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is responsible for setting the college readiness score. The HERC score required on the exit-level TAKS is 2200 on Math and ELA, with a 3 on the writing component.
