What is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act?
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) includes federal privacy, security, and transaction standards to protect patients’ medical records and other health information. HIPAA applies to non-student records (faculty, staff, non-Illinois State University students, summer camp participants, etc.) Student medical records, in most cases, are exempt from HPAA and are covered under FERPA or State of Illinois law. Patient privacy is a high priority at Illinois State University. We have written policies and procedures designed to protect patient privacy and confidentiality. Copies of those policies and procedures can be found in the policy manuals of the units within the health care component. We take unauthorized release of our patients’ personal health information seriously. If any member of the Illinois State University health care component workforce observes or has knowledge of any unauthorized release of protected health information from Illinois State University,
