Technetium has a half life of 211,000 years. The radioactive element technetium had disappeared from the natural environment due to radioactive decay having eliminated it. It is once again present in the environment, and is entirely man made, it is turning up in salmon in the form of the isotope technetium-99, fortunately in very tiny amounts that are unlikely to harm us, but as all of it escaped from nuclear power plants it is nevertheless a worrying trend. As technetium’s half is 211,000 years, it will still be here long after we are all dead and gone.
