What is the greatest piano song by a composer?

There is no such thing as a piano song, songs are vocal music. The greatest piano piece is a difficult question to answer… but my choice would be one of the following: Chopin – Ballade in G minor Beethoven – Apassionata Sonata Mozart – Sonata in A minor K310. Of course this is a ridiculously simplistic selection. You could write a book as an answer to this question. Edit: Hey Alberich! Glad to see you are back in the saddle buddy.

My nominee for the greatest piano “piece” by a classical composer, is P. Tschaikowsky’s 1st piano concerto in B-flat minor. It’s soaring and glorious opening, from which the 40-50’s pop tune “Tonight We Love” was derived, is incomparable in my opinion: nothing like it.

Even if my knowledge of the piano is a bit limited, I’ll have to say one of the greatest piano compositions would be the Piano Sonata in B minor, S.178 by Franz Liszt.
